Opinions about the position of women in science differ. Some would argue that women and men enjoy equality in access to education and establishing scientific careers, while others would claim that while we may be seeing more women today in the sciences, they are still not making it to the top. Still others examine gender biases in the construction of research institutions, how research questions are are framed, and how traditional expectations of career progression have a negative impact on women's success.
Few would argue today that women have lesser brain capacity than men, but we still often encounter the opinion that "obviously" women are not making it to the top because they prefer to divide their attention between their scientific career and family. Well, maybe some men do too!
When one comes to examine the issue of gender equality in the sciences, one is imediately struck by the almost complete lack of sex-disaggregated statistics in Central and Eastern Europe. In the sciences, we all know how important numbers are. Without numbers it is very difficult to make people listen to your arguments.
In this section you will see that a lot has changed and a lot has been done. You will find here information and documents relating to gender equality in R&D at the EU level and in our four respective countries. You will find that many documents relating to gender equality or anti-descimination laws were adopted in Central Europe during the pre-accession period. Although the laws are in place and bodies have been established, we still have a long way to go in terms of implementation and social awareness.
